February came, and now it’s gone. It’s good that the shortest month comes and goes so quickly, along with its mixed weather. Heavy winds, thick ice on the patio, rain and rain, and then more rain, and then Storm Doris blew through Sussex with 90mph winds. It toppled ancient trees, broke fences, the power flickered on and off, but we were the lucky ones. No damage. Then mid-February brought a sudden rise of temperature. It felt like summer: 15°C. The bulbs started blooming. The birds started building nests. A fox ran through the neighbourhood. And one night as I tiptoed downstairs for a drink of water, I saw a small frog hopping across the pavement under the kitchen window. I’m hopeful that winter is behind us. The cold felt very cold this year. And now it’s March. March on Spring.
